Learning to listen and trust: Nicki rebuilds relationship with teenage daughter

This year, SHINE for Kids supported many young people as they transitioned from the youth justice system into independent living with our Stand As One program, and Matt’s story is one we’re especially proud to share.
Matt*, a young man living in residential care, has faced more challenges than most people his age. After leaving youth justice, he was determined to build a stable future for himself, but limited financial independence made it difficult to take meaningful steps forward.
That began to change when he connected with his SHINE for Kids mentor.
With consistent guidance and advocacy from his mentor, Matt successfully secured JobSeeker payments. It may sound like a small win, but for Matt, it was life changing.
For the first time, he had full control over his own finances, a key milestone in his journey toward stability and independence.
“Being able to access my own money made me feel like I finally had control,” Matt told us. “It gave me motivation and helped me make better choices about my future.”
Once he gained financial autonomy, everything else began to shift. Matt became more confident and motivated. Staff at his care home noticed real improvements in his attitude and decision-making. He started engaging with employment services, exploring vocational training options, and building positive daily routines.
Most importantly, Matt has remained free from reoffending, a testament to his hard work and the power of the right support at the right time.
Matt’s story shows how practical, hands-on support can disrupt cycles of disadvantage. When young people are given the tools, confidence, and encouragement they need, they can rewrite their own futures.
It also highlights the impact of SHINE for Kids’ mentoring programs, made possible with the support of Gilbert + Tobin. Together, we’re helping young people find stability, independence, and hope.
Matt still has goals he’s working toward, but he now has something just as important: belief in himself and a pathway he’s proud of.
His journey is a powerful reminder that every small step forward matters — and with the right support behind them, young people can build the future they deserve.
