Christmas with young people in youth justice: Cookies, cards and connection

Our team brought a little Christmas cheer to young people in youth justice with a festive card-making and cookie-decorating session, and the joy in the room was unmistakable!

The sessions offered a calm, supported space for the girls and young women to slow down, get creative, and connect with their mentor and each other.

This time of year can be especially tough when you’re not at home while most families are gathering.

“There are many mixed emotions buzzing around … emotions can be heightened, and I was focussed on creating a calm space,” their mentor shared.

“When they arrived at the program area, their eyes all lit up when they saw the cookie making set out!” she said.

“They said, ‘Wow, do we get to do this with you?'”

Soon the room was full of colour and chatter as they decorated cookies in festive designs. Some had never tried gingerbread before and were curious to learn about this Christmas tradition, sparking lots of happy conversation about food, culture, and healthy eating.

Card-making was just as heartfelt. The group settled in to create thoughtful cards for the family and friends they can’t be with this year. Some also made cards for teachers and support workers at the centre. One young person even set out to make a card for everyone who has supported her through a really tough time.

Their mentor was right beside them, helping find the perfect words to express what they wanted to say.

It was a beautiful way to end the year, and their mentor is looking forward to many more hours spent supporting these young people to thrive and rebuild their futures in the year ahead.

This program is supported by Gilbert + Tobin.
