Storytime, Parklea: ‘I have done something great for my kids’

Our Storytime program is one of the most loved programs we run, especially among dads at Parklea Correctional Centre.

Through Storytime, parents in custody can stay connected to their children by recording themselves reading a book. Their child then receives both the storybook and the heartfelt recording, creating closeness even when apart.

Families tell us just how much these mean to them. Children listen to their parent’s voice again and again, finding comfort in their parent’s voice.

This helps keep the parent–child bond strong and support children’s wellbeing during what can be an incredibly tough time.

Here is some of the love feedback we have received from dads in custody who took part in the program and carers:

“I just wanted to say a really big thank you for the books and the recordings. It’s been an absolute hit with our 6 year old he has listened to Dad read at least three times since yesterday afternoon and is now attempting to read the book on his own.

Dad has asked if it would be possible for him to be able to do another one … We really do appreciate it as its important for the children to stay connected with their dad and it’s a really wonderful thing you do to make that a possibility.” – Carer

“Completing the program shows that I am making an effort.” – Dad in custody

“This program is excellent. It is hard to keep your head up in here, and this program has helped massively.” – Dad in custody

“Thank you for this, it really helped my mental state. I feel like I have done something great for my kids.” – Dad in custody

“I have gained a better understanding of what SHINE for Kids does for families and appreciate this program greatly.” – Dad in custody

“Thank you guys for your help, this program will be a memory for life.” – Dad in custody

“It means the world to me to complete this as it makes me feel somewhat connected to my kids.” – Dad in custody

“The SHINE program is a very good and positive program for us and our families.” – Dad in custody

“This program encourages me to be a better parent.” – Dad in custody

“I feel lea useless. In custody we can’t go to the shops to buy anything so when SHINE for Kids gives us an array of books to choose from, it’s like going to the shop. So what I gain is happiness in a place of sadness.” – Dad in custody

“My children loved it. They actually want more. When my wife tells me they want to listen to the books before bed it means so much because my voice is the last they hear before they go to sleep.” – Dad in custody

“It is good to let the kids know that I’m still here and love them even though I’m not there in person. I have hurt my kids by coming to jail but this program allows me to read to them before bed time.” – Dad in custody

“This will impact my family positively as my kids can play the recording every time they miss me.” – Dad in custody

“I was pleasantly surprised when offered this as an option. As a first time Dad it is amazing and at a time when things are hard. While it is not the ideal setting it will mean a lot as a memory and gesture for my son and I am truly grateful.” – Dad in custody

“Even after reading the feeling you get stays with you in your cell. The only thing sometimes I think I could have read better! It does also bring the family closer. My wife says it’s like I’m there with them just like before being in jail.” – Dad in custody

“This program excelled my expectations. Mel is such a kind and understanding lady that went out of her way for me and I’ll forever and will never forget this. This program brought me closer to my kids and helps fill the hole I have left not being present.” – Dad in custody

“My kids have school during the week so visits and video calls are hard to organise. This service offers a great way for me to stay connected with my kids.” – Dad in custody

“I have gained a respect for this program as it allows incarcerated dads to show their children they’re still here for them and on their mind.” – Dad in custody

“I hope the kids enjoy it as much as I did.” – Dad in custody
