This year, it’s been with great excitement that our popular Storytime program is being offered to families in Queensland for the first time!
Storytime comforts children and connects them with their parents in custody by providing a voice recording of their parents reading to them, which they can listen to along with the storybook at home.
It has been a great success, with many mums in custody wanting to be referred to the program!
When Mum Becca finished recording the storybook Miimi and Buwaarr, Mother and Baby, she turned to our team and said the experience had been very healing.
“While listening to the mother, I felt the beauty in the story as it states, ‘being your Miime (Mother) is the most precious gift life can give’,” said our team.
“It says, ‘When you were born, you opened my heart as wide as the ocean.’ It is a beautiful story of a mother and her child and the bond that they share.”
“As this is a new program in Queensland, it’s been great to see the positive impact on the families we support.”
For Becca and her family, being able to participate in the program came at just the right time.
Her children were involved in an accident while she was incarcerated, and being able to listen to their mother’s voice, reading them a story every day while they recover in hospital, has helped them feel supported and connected to her during this incredibly difficult time.
Nothing can replace a hug with mum, but when that’s not possible, Storytime helps make the hardest of times a bit easier.
“As this is a new program in Queensland, it’s been great to see the positive impact on the families we support,” said our team.
“To hear their mother’s voice whenever they like can remind children of the love and support their mother will always have for them.”
