Rise Townsville students graduate program with new-found confidence

Our Rise Townsville team celebrated the graduation of two wonderful students from the school mentoring program this June.

The students, Larry* and Alinta*, have experienced significant change in their short lives, including moving to new schools and periods when they struggled with school attendance.

However, they have persisted with the program and are both very proud of their achievements.

“Their journeys were not straightforward, but their resilience has been inspiring,” said their mentor, “despite changes in their lives, they remained connected to the program, demonstrating remarkable commitment.”

During sessions, their mentor has focused on activities to increase the students’ emotional well-being and self-esteem.

Both Larry and Alinta have faced stigma and challenges that come with having a parent in prison, and benefited from having a safe space within the program to process emotions and feel supported.

Alinta told me how excited she was to finish something she had worked on for so long and that she feels more confident at school and with her friends now.

At the graduation, Larry’s carer told our team, “We’ve seen such a big difference in his confidence! This program has helped him stay focused and committed even through school changes.”

The children’s teachers have also seen the improvement in their well-being, showing how grateful they were for the program by arranging for a special area at school for the children, their families and mentor to come together and mark their completion of the program.

“It was a feel-good moment watching as Larry proudly shared his certificate with his peers!” said their mentor, “And Alinta told me how excited she was to finish something she had worked on for so long and that she feels more confident at school and with her friends now.”

“Seeing them celebrated by their peers, carers, and school community was a powerful reminder of why this program matters.

“It reinforced the importance of providing consistent support, even when young people face disruptions like changing schools.”

The National Indigenous Australians Agency supports this program.
