Connection is key for these dads in custody
Dads at Macquarie Correctional Centre enjoyed creating gifts for their own dads at our special Father’s Day activity session. Many men applied to participate, and these days are always very popular! […]
The overcast day didn’t dampen the mood as a group of excited children entered the visit area.
Greeted by the sight of arts, crafts, games, toys, sporting gear, and treats, including fairy bread and ice blocks, the children knew they were in for a fun time from the minute they arrived, and any nerves were left at the door.
This all paled, however, to the most joyful sight, their Mum.
One Mum had not seen her son in three years and could barely contain her anticipation. While waiting for him to come through the door, she created a sign to hold up for him saying, “Miss You” to hold up.
When he finally entered the room, they embraced in a long, warm hug.
The day was full of laughter as the family groups moved around inside and outside, playing together.
One Mum was delighted as her daughter showed off her gymnastic skills, performing handstands and cartwheels! As kids gathered to watch, the older girl taught them her technique, and the little ones giggled as they tried their best to copy her.
There was a strong sense of togetherness and joy, which was no small accomplishment considering they were in a Correctional Centre visits area and not a playground.
“I saw beautiful moments where the mums wanted to help their children and take care of them with their hands and loving words. This quality time helps families to stay strong and keep going during difficult times,” said a team member.
As always, the feedback makes our day, and the day received lots of glowing reviews from mums.
“Thank you for making this day happen,” said one Mum. I enjoy spending time with my children. It is way better than the one-hour normal visits on Saturdays. We can hop between activities, and you are here to help me along the way if needed.”
Another mum said, “SHINE for Kids is amazing! You do outstanding work to get this day together.”
It’s not just the mothers, but the carers and case workers who appreciate these days.
A carer called us after the event to tell our team that the “children enjoyed the day with Mum. They talked about it all the way home!”
A case worker emailed us to say, “I just wanted to let you know that Zak* really enjoyed attending the SHINE for Kids day and it really helped him to have such a fun space to connect with Ruby* in. Thank you for all your efforts in helping to make that happen.”
The staff at the centre also appreciate these days, with lovely feedback from a programs officer who said, “It was a success, and you and the team deserve all the credit. It was my first time being involved. I see the value in what the day brings, not only for the kids but especially our inmates. Keep up the good work.”
Thanks to all for another wonderful Child & Parent Day at Silverwater Women’s Correctional Centre!
Our team says it perfectly; “Seeing the bond between mothers and their children brings a sense of joy, knowing that you are facilitating this connection.”
Thank you to Corrective Services NSW for providing lunch and to the caseworkers, carers and centre staff who make these days possible.
