Rise mentoring sessions with Frank* seem to fly by.
Each week, both mentor and mentee are surprised when their time is up, so absorbed are they in working through challenges, setting goals and diving into activities together.
Frank is an intelligent, empathetic and energetic Year 3 student on the Central Coast, NSW. Just eight weeks into the program, it has already become a highlight of his week, and his mentor is incredibly proud of his positive attitude towards learning.
With his family impacted by the incarceration of a loved one, Frank was referred to the program by his former school principal to help him stay engaged with his (bright!) future despite the challenges he faces.
His mentor describes him as an asset to his school, with a remarkable love of learning.
During their sessions, she draws on her understanding of the justice system and his circumstances to support him, helping him stay focused on the things he enjoys and motivated through the tougher moments.
She also provides practical support to Frank and his family, including weekly fresh fruit packages and school essentials when needed.
A bright future ahead
Frank’s interests are as impressive as they are diverse. He enjoys public speaking (and has already represented his school in debating), has a passion for the Newcastle Knights, and loves golf!
He’s also driven by a strong desire to help others. Frank has shared that he would like to become a judge, lawyer or emergency surgeon one day, saying, “the public sector is a place where I can help others through difficulties.”
He’s especially looking forward to the upcoming Rise Together outing these school holidays and says he feels like he’s the only child his mentor supports, so he’s excited to meet other kids who understand what he’s going through.
There’s no doubt that with support, Frank has a wonderful future ahead, and his mentor feels privileged to support him on that journey.
Thank you to The Benevolent Society for support Rise Mentoring.
