City2Surf community fundraiser: Meet Victoria

Thank you to wonderful supporter Victoria, who is running in this year’s City2Surf to raise funds for SHINE for Kids!

We spoke with Victoria about what’s motivating her to take on Heartbreak Hill for kids!

About Me

Hi, I’m Victoria, a final-year Social Work Honours and Criminology and Criminal Justice student. I currently work in before and after school care, and I’m passionate about working with children, young people, and families impacted by complex social systems.

I’ve completed a placement with the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ), volunteer with PCYC supporting youth in diversion and development programs, and I’m currently on placement at St Vincent’s Hospital across PECC (Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre) and PANDA (Psychiatric and Non-prescription Drug and Alcohol) units.

My experiences have deepened my commitment to supporting children and young people affected by justice and mental health systems.

What do you like about SHINE for Kids?

SHINE for Kids stands out because of its holistic, child-centred approach to breaking the cycle of intergenerational incarceration. I admire how SHINE doesn’t just provide services but builds real, long-term connections that help kids maintain important relationships, especially with their parents. Their programs are practical, trauma-informed, and genuinely focused on building brighter futures.

What made you choose to support SHINE?

Through my studies and professional experiences, I’ve seen how having a parent in prison can disrupt a child’s sense of safety, stability, and belonging. While I don’t have a direct personal connection, I’ve supported many children impacted by the justice system, and SHINE’s mission aligns closely with my values and future goals as a social worker. Supporting SHINE is my way of standing in solidarity with those families and kids.

What motivates you when preparing for the City2Surf?

Every training session reminds me of why I’m doing this—kids who deserve connection, safety, and hope. It keeps me going knowing that each step helps raise awareness and funds to support programs that create real, positive change.

What will you be focussing on as you run on the day?

On the day, I’ll be thinking of the families and children I’ve worked with—those facing unimaginable challenges, and yet showing incredible resilience. I’ll also be thinking of the SHINE team and the community behind this cause. That energy will push me through Heartbreak Hill!

Is there any message you’d like to share with our kids, families or supporters?

To the kids and families: You are not alone, and there are people in the community who believe in your strength and potential. To supporters: Your help goes further than you realise—thank you for being part of something that truly matters.
