Our Queensland team ran a great activity at Playgroup this week with mums in custody and their bubs for Reconciliation Week. 🖤💛❤️
Our amazing local team member wrote:
“We used our Aboriginal symbols cards along with red, yellow and white ochre to create our artworks.
It was wonderful watching the children grow their literacy skills by selecting the symbols they wanted to represent, and figuring out how to form those symbols using the ochre.
The activity also supported rich conversations with their Mums about the meaning of each symbol.
In the background, we had some beautiful Indigenous children’s music playing – the ‘Ngama’, ‘Yalaynha Yuluwirri’ and ‘Look, Learn, Sing Dance’ CDs.
Later in the session, after we had heard some of the songs a few times, we sang and danced along, tapping our tapsticks to the rhythm of the music.
Then at lunch time we read lots of stories by Indigenous authors, including ‘Country’, ‘Bangu the Flying Fox’ and ’10 Scared Fish’.
The children admired the artworks in the stories, named and counted the animals, and learnt an important lesson about friendship and loyalty.”
This Playgroup session was held in Brisbane, Queensland, as one of our weekly sessions with parents in custody and their children.
