A big year marks turning point for David, 11
The difference a year can make! 11-year-old David* had a tough start in life, with both parents in custody and little contact with them. He had difficulty regulating his emotions and trusting adults. […]
Children will have a little bit of mum at home, and mums will have a reminder that even though they are apart, they are still a little person’s special someone.
Mums on the inside and their children visiting for our Playgroup at Southern Qld Correctional Centre were able to experience the special Christmas ritual of putting up the tree together this week, something they’d otherwise miss out on this year.
The mums filled baubles with natural materials like gum nuts and wattle and added beautiful messages of love for their children so that they would have something extra special to take home.
It went both ways, with the children getting very creative and filling their baubles with all sorts of treasures – tinsel, pom poms, gumnuts, you name it!
Children will have a little bit of mum at home, and mums will have a reminder that even though they are apart, they are still a little person’s special someone.
They then proudly hung their creations on the centre tree for their mums to admire during Christmas. They loved the freedom to explore and create with so many materials and make something special for their mums.
This Christmas playgroup also included face painting, Christmas card making and painting glittery Santa, reindeer and elf masks!
The mums were excited to give their children Christmas presents they had purchased from the Correctional Centre catalogue.
They gave them to the children after a lovely lunch provided by the centre, which included all the kids’ favourites, sausage rolls, pies, sandwiches, fruit and ice cream! It really was a day to remember.
Our team said it was “wonderful to work together as a team with the correctional centre to make sure this Christmas playgroup was truly special for the families!”
