Connection is key for these dads in custody

Mums in custody (and a big sister and Aunty!) were over the moon when the happy little group of ten children ran into their waiting arms at Wellington Correctional Centre’s recent Child & Parent Day.
Held during school holidays, families often make long drives to spend this special time with their mum.
Much longer than regular visits, these days allow children to freely move around the visit area and outdoor areas with loved ones, which are both set up with fun things for them to do together!
During regular visits, families must stay seated most of the time, which is difficult for young children. Not being able to move around makes it difficult to ensure that time together as a family is engaging and a positive experience, so these special activity days are really important in allowing space and time for the vital child-parent relationship to be nurtured.
“There were a few tears when goodbyes were said, but the children all agreed they had a great time.”
Face painting, beading, playing with kinetic sand, and crafting away on decorated glittery photo frames and bags—there was plenty to keep everyone happy, from the youngest child there, aged three, right up to the teenagers.
Families laughed as they played board games, with one young mum teaching her son chess. Outside, the soccer balls and baseballs led to some competitive fun!
“Everyone was very busy with the activities, making jewellery for each other or face painting with all the family helping … everyone went smoothly from one activity to the next,” said our local team member who was available to facilitate play and support families on the day.
After morning tea, it was time to take family photos to send to carers, helping the children remember this special day with their mum, sister, and aunty.
Saying goodbye at the end of these days is always hard, but our trained team is on hand to support families, and the memories of happy time spent together are treasured by children and mums alike.
“It was a great day, and I found it lovely to see the smiles on all the children’s faces,” said our team member.
