Child & Parent Days are the highlight of the holidays for lots of children and their parents in custody, and this one at Wellington Correctional Centre did not disappoint!
Full of laughter and games, the dads and kids got straight into the activities provided, which included sports, board games, crafts, toys and more than enough to keep children of any age entertained!
One little 9-month-old baby enjoyed her dad’s undivided attention, smiling and laughing until she needed a nap from all the fun. He stayed right next to her while she slept and drew a picture for her to take home.
The correctional centre staff were a great help on the day and provided a BBQ, fruit and snacks for everyone as well as helped make it extra fun by doing some face-painting and supporting the activities.
“The support [from staff] was exceptional. It ensured all who attended felt supported, and it was a relaxing atmosphere,” said our team.
The feedback our team received from families was lovely and shows how important these days are for everyone involved:
“It was a great day, we need more like this.” – Dad in custody
“I saw two of my children for the first time in six years and for that I am forever grateful. This children’s day is the best thing I’ve seen in prison.” – Dad in custody
“It was a great event. SHINE for Kids employee was super helpful. More events would be great.” – Dad in custody
“My daughter cried because she didn’t want to leave him [her dad in custody], first time ever!” – Carer of child with a dad in custody
“Today made me feel closer to my parent. We definitely see the difference [in them] in a positive way.” – Child visiting dad in custody
