When dad Brett* returned home after being in custody, the family was filled with excitement but also trepidation.
While he much missed, new family routines and dynamics had formed, and his return brought change back into the household.
Brett’s children have taken a little time adjusting, and there have been some behavioural issues at home with everyone’s emotions heightened.
Our Family Support worker, however, has been on hand to ease this transition period for the family.
She is working closely with mum Didi* and dad Brett to support them in building healthy relationships with the children.
These skills make a useful tool kit for every parent, but especially those undergoing large changes at home.
Part of this process has been using skills from the parenting program Bringing Up Great Kids to help mum and dad better understand what their children are experiencing and children’s development.
This has helped Brett and Didi pause and consider their child’s perspective when an issue comes up instead of reacting negatively.
These skills make a helpful tool kit for every parent, but especially those undergoing large changes at home.
Another part of helping the family during this time has been making sure they are connected with their local community by introducing them to the community centre and other nearby services, including the Salvation Army and Angicare.
This means the family are wrapped in support, alleviating stress and feelings of isolation.
“Life at home is improving, and both parents are reaching out for help now when needed, rather than becoming stressed and overwhelmed,” said their SHINE for Kids support worker.
“They are really grateful for our support.”
