Family Support

Ongoing, stable support for families and children with a parent in custody.

What is Family Support?

Our trained Family Support workers help to assess the needs of families where a child or children has a parent in custody. Family Workers refer families to other organisations or supports and help families to apply for and access those services, as well as provide guidance and information on a variety of areas related to children’s well-being.

What’s involved?

Families are connected with a Family Support worker who works with them before and after a parent’s incarceration. Support is provided on a needs-basis and can include parenting and relationship guidance, help finding housing, help accessing health and medical services, help with budgeting and managing households, support accessing employment opportunities, food relief, and connecting families with a parent in custody.

Why is this program needed?

Families often face compounding stresses and pressures when a parent is incarcerated, from loss of income to trauma and isolation. Without support, children’s well-being can suffer, and they can become disconnected from their education and have poorer health and emotional outcomes.

By intervening early and supporting families through difficult times, it ensures that children get the help they need to not just survive but thrive.

Who is this for & how to apply?

This program is for families with a parent in custody who require support.
