Our CEO, Julie Hourigan, attended the Senate inquiry hearing into Australia’s youth justice and incarceration system at Parliament House in February 2025.
She told the inquiry about the urgent need for more investment in post-release support for young people.
“When they are going back into their community, there are often waitlists, very long waitlists, for local services, and they have to retell their story to access those services … statistically, young people are most likely to re-offend in the first six months post-release.
“We could bridge that gap while young people are immediately released, making sure that the referrals and the connections back into the support systems locally stick.”
A report from the Senate Inquiry is due to be completed and released by 1 July 2025.
