Mothers Day 2024: Card making session helps men send heartfelt messages
This year, for Mother’s Day, our team at Macquarie Correctional Centre organised a special Connection Activity Day for the men in custody.
These days are always popular with then men, who jump at the chance to show their support network on the outside just how important they are and how much they mean to them.
Coloured paper, poems, and lovely drawings were featured heavily as the men sat in the calm and peaceful workshop to create cards for loved ones.
Our team member was on hand to provide support, materials, guidance and craft tips to the many newcomers who needed help and were worried that they were not artistic.
Luckily, our team had prepared some templates for the men to use if they wanted so that everyone could get involved, whatever the skill (and crafting) level!
We love these sessions as they not only provide an opportunity for families to connect but also give people in custody a chance to reflect quietly on family and try something new.
“They all seemed surprised at how good the cards looked!” said our local team member.
“An officer printed quotes to cut out and add to the cards, and we used glue guns to add flowers. They really looked fantastic!”
“Thank you for all your love and support. I love you forever and always, your son.”
The messages sent to families were truly beautiful.
One participant wrote to his wife and mother of their children, “I love and miss you every day I’m not with you. I can’t wait for the day we reunite. I’ll be home before you know it.”
And to the mothers with a son in custody, lovely messages included, “To Mum, I love you and miss you more each day. I’ll be home soon. You’re the best. Love your son,” and “Thank you for all your love and support. I love you forever and always, your son.”
The feedback received from participants after the session was wonderful, showing just how grateful they are for these opportunities.
“Can I come back next week!?” asked one participant, hoping these were regular workshops.
These days are also rewarding for the SHINE for Kids team, with our team member saying, “Building connections from within the centres is very rewarding. Helping men make something they can be proud to send to their mums was lovely.
“I think there will be a few happy tears from their mums when they receive these.”
Please donate today and support programs for families affected by the justice system.
