SHINE for Kids had the pleasure of being involved in ‘Behind the Sentence’, an installation by artist Dr. Paula Mahoney and presented by The Neighbourhood Justice Centre at Collingwood Yards in Melbourne for Victoria Law Week, 2025.
The art projection has brought to life our and Monash University Associate Professor Catherine Flynn’s Children’s Voices research, which was released last year.
From the first moment, we have been excited by this opportunity to raise awareness of the impact of parental incarceration and reach people who may not have thought about it before.
Children of prisoners are the invisible victims of crime and suffer stigma, disadvantage and the trauma of separation yet receive no formal support.
The artwork was launched on Monday, the 19th Ma,y and the event included an insightful panel discussion with SHINE for Kids National Practice Manager Moana Wati, Catherine Flynn (Med), Stevie Wright of SNAICC – National Voice for our Children, lawyer and social justice advocate Vincent Shin and Ralph Gotlib, Principal at Bindjiroo Yaluk Community School.
The packed event was attended by locals, like-minded organisations, supporters and politicians and was a great success!
Behind the Sentence is free and available to view after 530pm until the 25th of May.
