My Life Now for young people with parents in prison

June 2012

The Colourful Dreaming program uses the world of art to encourage the connection of imprisoned fathers to their children while expanding their view of themselves and their world. ‘Colourful Dreaming’ has been instrumental in elevating the self-confidence of the men in the program. A good percentage of the men are now employed by the correctional centres in different roles.

The children also benefit by being able to experience a renewed connection to community. Their eyes are opened to new experiences and learn more about their rich culture by creating artwork in a diversity of media.

The 2012 exhibition opened on 27 June at Gallery 43, TAFE Riverina Institute and was officiated by Cr Kerry Pascoe, Mayor of Wagga Wagga.

Everyone was welcomed to the exhibition by Aunty Kath Withers, Wiragjuri Elder. Aunty Kath plays a key role in the program working and teaching the men in program a range of cultural arts and crafts.

Thank you to the many staff at TAFE Riverina who helped enormously with handing the art work and making the exhibition a very professional production and for providing their fantastic new art gallery to host the event. The good news is that most of the artworks sold!
