 Inmates at Frank Baxter make the new SHINE mentoring program in their own image

To introduce a new mentoring program for young men at Frank Baxter Juvenile Justice Centre in Kariong NSW, a competition was held amongst the inmates for the name and the logo of the program. The result: Stand As One.

 Helping kids in a challenging situation

SHINE for Kids is a voluntary organisation that raises funds to assist children who have a loved one incarcerated in Wellington Correctional Centre. According to Child and Family Worker Maree Thomas, the Child and Family centre runs activities for the children when they go to visit so they don't have to stay in the gaol the entire time of their visit.

The Enriched List highlights people who are using their skills, talents and dreams to give to their community.

Archived on the ABC website, it sensitively shows the impact of one father's incarceration on two of his children and their grandmother, who became their guardian – and how SHINE for Kids was able to assist.

SHINE for Kids was launched officially in Victoria by Professor David de Kretser AC, Governor of Victoria at the Phoenix Youth Centre in Footscray on 17 March 2010. Special guests MC Claire Hooper and performer Dan Sultan kept the audience entertained.
