March 2011
From December 2010 to March 2011 Department of Correctional Services Staff undertook a community consultation project at SHINE for Kids Bathurst. This project began after identifying that the front entrance and yard of the Bathurst SHINE for Kids building was in need of maintenance. During this work issues of OH&S and aesthetics were also addressed.
The physical transformation involved shaping and replanting of garden including the construction of a wooden retaining wall, repairs to the front fence, removal of some trees, establishment of turf, and re-concreting of the front steps. This was carried out by inmates from external ground maintenance and mobile outreach program. All work was supervised by senior overseers Andrew Mackenzie and Scott Keen.
This project has been a very positive experience for everyone involved, with a very professional end result. Many positive comments have been made by clients and visitors to SHINE for Kids staff on how much more inviting the front entrance looks.
