SHINE for Kids will establish a National Youth Advisory Council as part of its Our Voice Youth Leadership program for young people who have experienced parental incarceration.
The Our Voice National Youth Leadership Program will provide young people with a parent or family member in prison an opportunity for their voices to be heard and to develop their leadership skills. ‘Our Voice’ aims for the voices of children and young people affected by the criminal justice system to be heard by government, law-makers, educators, business, philanthropy, media and the wider community, working towards the development of an Australian Bill of Rights for Children and Young People with an Incarcerated Parent.
The first of its kind in Australia, SHINE for Kids is seeking applications for the National Youth Advisory Council from young people between the ages of 18 and 25 from 8 states and territories, with a passion for advocating on behalf of others and who want to be a part of SHINE for Kids.
The National Youth Advisory Council will be established to provide advice and recommendations to SHINE for Kids on issues that impact young people with a parent or family member in prison as well as develop youth-led, community based strategies and projects in response to those issues. In return, SHINE will provide members career advancement training and leadership development opportunities. The National Youth Advisory Council will come together bi-annually to meet and at other times will meet via teleconference.
