Who we are

Founded in 1982, SHINE for Kids has provided crucial support to children and young people with incarcerated parents and/or relatives for over 35 years. The invisible victims of crime, children experience significant psychological trauma and impact on their emotional and social development as a result of their parent’s imprisonment.

The only national charity to provide services to support children and young people from infancy to adulthood, SHINE for Kids programs operate in secure, open custody, and transitional correctional facilities throughout NSW, ACT, VIC and QLD.

SHINE’s programs are designed to provide support and positive opportunities to reduce the likelihood of children transitioning into child protection and justice systems, help avoid family fragmentation and intergenerational offending, and to reduce both juvenile and adult recidivism.

The Program

The RISE Education Program provides students with an incarcerated parent with a dedicated mentor who will provide them with support in the classroom for a 12 month period. This may be in the classroom with class work, building their confidence in the social environments, or in the playground playing ball and talking about whatever is on their mind that day.

By becoming a positive role model to a student in need, you are ensuring they don’t just survive a difficult time in their life but that they thrive.

The program aims to increase school attendance, educational outcomes, self-esteem and decrease antisocial behaviour and school suspensions.

By providing the student with a positive role model and ensuring that the child continues to engage in their educational needs away from the classroom through the Homework Program and organised school holiday activities.

If required the School Suspension Program so the child can thrive though is a difficult time for them.
