About SHINE

Founded in 1982, SHINE for Kids has provided crucial support to children and young people with a parent or parents currently engaged with the Justice System and/or relatives for over 35 years.

The invisible victims of crime, children experience significant psychological trauma and deep impact on their socio-emotional development as a result of their parent’s imprisonment.

The only national charity to provide services to support children and young people from infancy to adulthood, SHINE for Kids programs operate in secure, open custody, and transitional correctional facilities throughout NSW, ACT, VIC , QLD and WA.

SHINE’s programs are designed to provide support and positive opportunities to reduce the likelihood of children transitioning into child protection and justice systems, help avoid family fragmentation and intergenerational offending, and to reduce both juvenile and adult recidivism.

About  the RISE Education Program

The RISE Education Program provides students with an immediate family member in custody with a dedicated mentor. The mentor will provide them with support for a 12 month period. This may be in the classroom with class work, building their confidence in social environments, or in the playground playing ball and talking about whatever is on their mind that day.

RISE also provides group outings during the school holidays.

The program aims to increase school attendance, educational outcomes, self-esteem and decrease antisocial behaviour and school suspensions.

RISE Education Mentors are responsible for providing one on one mentoring in the classroom weekly for 45 minutes for each student.

Mentors work closely with the RISE Education Coordinator and schools to provide students with a positive role model and someone to advocate for them within the school environment, as a mentor you are ensuring they don’t just survive a difficult time in their life but that they thrive.
