SHINE for Kids
Today SHINE for Kids acknowledges the over representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mums and dads in our prisons and the devastating effect their continued incarceration has on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and community. We reflect on how our nation currently has the lowest crime rates since colonisation but the highest rates of incarceration with Aboriginal women being the fastest growing prison population. The process of colonisation that started on January 26 1788 has left a legacy of dispossession and incarceration that continues today. At SHINE for Kids we are passionate about transforming the lives of all children who have contact with the criminal justice system and continually work to develop relationships with Aboriginal families and learn from Aboriginal communities and organisations. Most importantly we listen and we learn. On 26 January we honour the strength and resilience of children separated by the incarceration of their parent and the diversity of our nation. We celebrate how far we have come, but as we look to the future, we realise just how far there is to go. #alwayswasalwayswillbe ... See MoreSee Less

@AprilJLong Exactly! - @jonesy_anna is looking into developing similar over here -so important @ChildrenHandS found some schools mistakenly believe they don’t have children affected by parental imprisonment - but it’s actually because they don’t ask - such important work you are doing

Incredibly proud of this project and looking forward to rolling out nationally. We just equip teachers on how best to support children with a parent in prison. All systems incl education have a responsibility to help children not just survive this difficult period but thrive https://twitter.com/SHINEforKids/status/1351353213694353409

SHINE has developed & implemented Australia’s first teacher training program to support students with an incarcerated parent. In 2020, we partnered with Western Sydney University to have the training evaluated. We are delighted to share the report.
