At SHINE for Kids we are passionate about transforming the lives of children and young people affected by the criminal justice system. For over 35 years we have worked together with children and their families to strengthen connection to community and family through education, support & mentoring to help them thrive.
Children are the invisible victims of crime. It’s not their fault their parent is in prison. Nor should they bear the shame and the stigma. They experience significant psychological trauma and impact on their emotional and social development as a result of their parent’s imprisonment. When a parent spends time in prison, it creates an adverse childhood experience that has lifelong impact.
Through our programs for children and young people like child prison visits, supported transport, child parent days, education support and mentoring, SHINE is breaking the cycle of offending, reconnecting families, and improving education outcomes.
Your support helps us continue to deliver these unique programs to children and young people and guide them in the right direction.
With 180 prisons in Australia and 43,000 inmates, it is estimated that there are 45,000 children that need our help. Currently SHINE operates in 21 prisons supporting 5,700 children and 5,000 families in NSW, ACT, QLD and VIC. This is only the tip of the iceberg.
With your help we can continue to grow to help more children with a mum or dad in prison.
