SHINE for Kids has been providing crucial support to children and young people with a relative in the criminal justice system for over 30 years. We have a firm belief in the power of early intervention and a focus on collaboration, to reduce the negative effects of parental imprisonment on children and young people.

It is estimated that at any one time, approximately 45,000 students in NSW are directly affected by the imprisonment of a parent, and there are many more in the rest of Australia. Over 77,000 students under the age of 16 have experienced parental incarceration at some point in their lives.

These young Australians are hidden in the community and can feel very isolated and stigmatized. SHINE for Kids supports children of prisoners to develop coping mechanisms and provides opportunities for these children too support each other.

Our purpose statement is: “We are passionate about transforming the lives of children and young people affected by the criminal justice system.”

Our Child and Family Centres offers services to both urban and regional areas in New South Wales. We have programs in several prisons in Victoria, one in the ACT, and we have extended our services to Townsville and Brisbane in Queensland.

We are passionate about creating supportive spaces for these young Australians, and want to continue fostering this in our local communities. SHINE for Kids is lucky to be one of the beneficiaries of “Who wants to be a Rock Star?” the Financial Industries Charity Aid Program (FICAP) fundraising event originally scheduled for 26 March but now to be held in September due to COVID-19 (more information to follow). As part of this event, they will be holding a fundraising auction, with all proceeds going to SHINE for Kids, Learning Links, and Starlight.

Auction prize

One of our auction prizes is the Ultra Medium Trampoline, valued at $899, which our friends at Vuly Play have kindly donated. Vuly Play is Australia’s leading designers and manufacturers of trampolines – and their products don’t compromise on safety or fun.

The Ultra Medium promises soft landings only, with its springs covered in a thick safety padding, completely external to the enclosure. The tight-weave netting is also attached straight to the jump mat, keeping little ones safe from frame contact. Not even rain can stop the fun! These trampolines have been thoroughly tested in all weather conditions.
