Job purpose

Provide transport and support of children so as to enable those children to maintain a close relationship with their imprisoned parent(s). The SHINE for Kids Transport Program ensures that the parent/child relationship is not affected by the impact of imprisonment and transport services are specifically targeted to those children who would otherwise not be able to maintain contact with their parent(s).

Skills and attributes

  • Collect children from an arranged place and transport them to their imprisoned parent (an organisational vehicle will be available for you to transport children whilst volunteering)
  • Return children to an arranged place after their visit with their imprisoned parent
  • Emotionally support children before, during and after visits with their imprisoned parent
  • Remain on the visit with the child/ren
  • Ensure a safe environment for all those who attend, taking into account child care and protection principles of situational prevention and risk management
  • Have an understanding of the issues and challenges that children of prisoners face
  • Have an awareness of the issues faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse clients
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills


  • One day as required

Times required

  • Saturdays or Sundays
  • Travel time plus 10.00am–3.00pm in-visit

Training provided

  • 2-hour in-house course
  • 1 day assisting Supported Transport engagement

Other requirements

  • The capacity to receive clearance via a criminal record check
  • An understanding and adherence with Work Health and Safety principles to ensure the health and safety of yourself and others at the workplace
  • An understanding of the principles and practices related to workplace diversity and Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO)
  • Current VIC Working with Children Check
  • Current drivers licence
  • First Aid Certificate desirable
