Child and Family Centres are in many prisons in NSW
Visiting a prison can be a daunting and confusing experience for anyone.
Our Child and Family Centres in New South Wales provide child-friendly, supportive venues for families, children and all visitors to drop in when visiting prisons, to relax and unwind before or after their visit.
- For families, the staff and volunteers provide emotional support, assistance and connections with other families in your situation.
- For kids, there’s time out from the visit to just be themselves, play with others in the same situation and relax.
- For parents, they can know their children are being minded in a safe place while they maintain their relationship with the imprisoned parent and have discussions the kids shouldn’t overhear.
The Drop-in Service at Child and Family Centres is for parents and carers before or after a visit – somewhere to just relax with a cuppa, let the kids colour in, do arts and crafts or just play where it is clean and friendly, and talk to someone who listens to them without judging them by what the family member has done.
During Drop-in we can show you how SHINE for Kids can help you in other ways. If you’re new to the prison system you may be unsure what to expect or how the process works. We’ve been helping families like yours for over 30 years so we can give you a better understanding of what is required and where you need to go. We can also provide referrals to community agencies that can help you in lots of ways.
